Friday April 28 and Saturday April 29, 2023 at Servus Place in St. Albert, AB,
in the Go Auto Arena
A few pictures from last years event in the Go Auto Arena.
Competitors from as young as 4 years old will gather at the end of April 2023 to compete in a wide range of events. The 2023 Fire and Ice Championships will include the obstacle course and board breaking for the youngest athletes, and for regular Martial Artists, there will be pattern and sparring events.
We are adding the high kick competition this year as well. We also have a kickboxing event for kickboxers who are entry level athletes. Kickboxers who have zero to about 9 events in experience.
Red and Black belts will compete Friday night in their pattern divisions starting at 8 pm.
Then on Saturday all of the other events will take place. Opening ceremonies are at 9 am and the competition gets under way about 30 minutes later.
The Shadow Warriors will begin the day with their obstacle course and board breaking at that time and should be completed by 11:30 am. All other competitors will also start at 9:30 am but will continue throughout the day until the event ends at 6 pm.

EVENT RULES
Patterns: ITF pattern rules apply. Single elimination to the final round. Divisions will be by age, gender and belt level. Division of 2 or less will be folded into another division. Colour belts will perform a pattern of their level or one level below. Black belts will perform one pattern of their level or one level below. Black belts will perform an additional pattern, randomly selected, for the gold/silver round. (Chon-ji to Gae-Baek)
Sparring: ITF sparring rules apply. Single elimination to the final round. Divisions will be by age, gender and belt level. Division of 2 or less will be folded into another division. Sparring gear is mandatory (hands, feet and head) as are mouth guards and groin cups for males. Colour belts will spar 1 round of 120 seconds (2 minutes). Black belt sparring rounds will be 2 rounds of 120 seconds (2 minutes) with a 1 minute break in between each round. 1 point for any punch, 2 points for a kick to the body, 3 points for a kick to head. Add 1 point to any of the previous scores if done while jumping.
Shadow Warrior Obstacle Course: This will be a timed event. Divisions will be divided into age groups and gender groups. There will be additional certificate awards for the best etiquette. The course will consist of crawling, jumping, running, dodging and of course some kicking. The Shadow Warriors will be the first event called to compete Saturday morning.
Shadow Warrior Board Breaking: Divisions will be the same as the obstacle course. The break will take place at the end of the obstacle course. Shadow Warriors will be done by noon and can leave or stay as you wish.
High Kick competition (compete against yourself and win Gold Silver or Bronze)
First off you will be competing for the over all height of your kick compared to your height. You will win a Gold medal if you can hit the target at a height above your head which equals your extended arm and hand to the tip of your fingers. You will win a silver medal if you can hit the target at a height above your head which equals your extended arm to the top of your fist. You will win a bronze medal if you can hit the target at a height above your head which equals your extended arm to the top of your bent wrist.
Divisions
12 and under all belts male/female
13 to 17 all belts male/female
Adult all belts male/female
Competitors will stand under the pad holder to mark their height. They will then back up as needed to begin their attempt. When the referee indicates, the competitor will form an L-stance forearm guarding block and kiya. They will then at their own time execute their kick. To complete the action the competitor must land and then return to an L-stance forearm guarding block. They do not have to land in the stance. Falling to the floor will negate the attempt. Falling means a knee or a hand touches the floor after the attempt.
Competitors will be allowed 2 attempts. If the first is successful the second attempt can be at a higher mark. 2 misses score zero.
Competitors will be allowed time before the competition begins to practice on the holder to determine what height they might like to place the target pad. Or competitors are encouraged to determine the height before coming to the competition. Practice high kicks in class at your club on a hand held paddle so you know approximately how high you will want the target for the competition.

Schedule of events
Taekwon-Do tournaments are a very different type of competition when compared to other sports like hockey or soccer. Since there are over 140 different divisions there is never a time sensitive way to schedule when a person’s group may go up to compete. There are also multiple “rings” that are working so a “ring” may come open at any time, ready for the next group. Our event runs 10 rings plus an additional space for the Shadow Warrior event.
Phoenix runs the divisions from the youngest age, lowest belt, upwards through the ages and belts until the oldest age. So Shadow Warriors are first followed by any non Shadow warriors aged 6,7 or 8. These 6, 7 and 8 year olds would be called with the white belts going first followed by yellow and then green. After these divisions the next age group, 9, 10 and 11 would be called with the white belts in this age group going first followed by the yellow belts then the green belts etc.
Knowing this order of divisions allows you to at least see if you are close to being called to the on deck area. Listen to the age group and belt and you will know how close you are to being called. Competitors are first called to the on deck area and then taken to a ring.
The only exception to this rule would be if your division has been folded into another due to low number of entries. You would be placed into another division, possibly a different belt level or possibly a different age level. This list of “folded” competitors would be at the on deck area and announced throughout the day.
